In light of the 25,000,000 lost records from the Inland Revenue, I am urging everyone to stop and think about their own personal data for a moment. For far too long, the Government has regarded our personal and private data as their own. If they want that information, we MUST hand it over, regardless of the rationale. We are not told what any of the specific information is used for or why they need so much of it, what they intend to do with it and we are expected to comply.
The catalogue of security lapses at HMRC is hair-raising. In the past year, there have been 2,111 reported breaches of security, including the theft of 41 laptops.I say ENOUGH is ENOUGH! our personal data is our own. The Government cannot be trusted to look after it, they have proven this time and time again. Now it is time for us to tell them our personal data is none of their damn business. As long ago as September 2005, an unencrypted CD with sensitive financial information was lost in the post; in May this year, 42,000 tax credit and bank details were posted to the wrong people; earlier this month, a CD with the personal details of 15,000 people went missing.
In the light of such serial incompetence (and these are just the ones we know about), Whitehall appears incapable of securing computerised information.

It will be a cold day in hell before I comply with the identity card and I urge everyone else to refuse.

*UPDATE*
The terryfing possibility that has sprung up from the gross and criminal incompetence of this fucking useless bunch of fuckwit cockmuppets in government is brazenly demonstrated at:
kadja's brand new look website
The kadja.com website's 'about us' page reveals the following:No - We don't really have access to the 7.5M records of family data that the Government lost on the 18th October 2007. We only wanted to highlight in visual terms just one of the many disastrous and horrible things that could be done with this information if (or when?) it falls into the wrong hands.
We hope we have not upset you too much - we are equally disgusted and appalled by the type of content parodied on the main page. However it sometimes needs a bit of a shock to bring ones mind into focus.
This loss of data is unforgivable, the mere fact that it is possible for someone working in the HMRC to download ALL DATA for EVERY PERSON in the UK receiving Child Benefit, burn it to a disc and stick it in their pocket is a disgrace.
How we can do this
Because the UK Government and Civil Service are apparently incompetent.

This week's story about the loss of financial information for millions of British taxpayers underscores that government cannot be trusted with your personal data. It isn't that the data was stolen, but that the government wasn't even taking basic precautions with it. The disks were unencrypted, and sent by regular mail!
I would like to add that there has been a report that the passwords for the computer files were included with the disks! this equals the personal records of every family with children in the UK without ANY security WHATSOEVER!

***UPDATE***
I recieved the following comment:
Hi Ken, How safe is the data bank you are creating? How can I
know that the Government will not gain access to, and act upon,
the information.
I would say two things,
- Who cares? They would only lose your data anyway.
- And less flipantly, I am hoping to sign up at least 10 million people. I am not keeping the details of who signs up to the pledge. I do not care who signs up, so long as they are British Voters in very large numbers. I am NOT storing this information, Pledge-bank is.
The Government is incapable of acting against tens of millions of very pissed off voters and when they see how many people are seriously offended and frightened and VERY ANGRY about the depth and breadth of the gross incompetence carried out by a Government that has broken the contract of trust between the Governing and the Governed, I hope that they will reverse the course of change. They have been reversing the relationship between the citizen and the state for years. Slowly enancting a myriad items of legislation that, drip-by-drip, step-by-step, slowly change the Government from being our paid servants into our overpaid, overbearing, over powerful masters. - We are not going to be able to pursuade this Government to change course by meekly complying with the dangerous ID card and its National Identity register. Neither asking, begging nor demanding will not work with this Government. if 80% of the population cannot pursuade them to hold a referendum on the EU treaty, they will NOT listen to our arguments and act accordingly. They will only listen to the public staging MASSIVE PEACEFULL non-compliance and civil disobedience on a huge scale. We NEED our 'orange' revolution.
